I liked how the story made you think about how such a sudden change with the reverends appearence made the townsfolk fear him. It was kind of sad but still moving.
Wow I never noticed that. That black has been in all of the stories. I didnt notice it in the lottery until the end with the black dot and all the dark settings.
Maybe they think of him as the one who represents death, one who is there for the last moments on earth. And for black to be the color of the veil. It's a connection to death.
i agree with Jonathan, what about not seeing his face was so disturbing. It said that the girls often wore the veil with bonnets. maybe it was the idea of uncanny.
Mirror? Does the black vail really symbolize the sin that the minister commited? Does it make the people think about their sins to show that they sin to.
Agreeing with Sarah in the inner circle, the black veil could represent sins and regret, and so he's proving that everybody has one, they just choose whether to show it or not.
Well black always seems to have a separate purpose to what people tend to think of it in gothic senses. The black veil could mean deceit or something that he has to hide because black seems to be the color noone can trust. It plays the devils advocate in a sense
people are saying that black symbolises something dark when people sin but if you notice that priests and nuns wear black what does that symbolize then?
I dont know why he wont take off the black vail wes. I was wondering the same thing if there was a reason that he wore the vail for so long. And if the vail had a bigger meaning than sins.
I think that the black veil represents secrets or sin. I agree with Eric in the inner circle, since he is a minister and maybe he has sinned, that waring a black veil is being frowned upon yourself and telling others that they should do the same.
I believe I agree that towns have a dark side to them. They are little, and with little towns, a lot can go wrong, people who may be sick of the town, may want to change. And corruption and damage throughout the town can occur.
Devo... Thats a good question I dont know what it would symbolize in that sense. Because they do wear black but they are supposed to be serving god. It's not ment to be seen as a bad color when nuns and preists wear it.
I agree that the veil was separated him from the world and he wanted to keep it that way. Maybe the reason that he was a priest was the only person that would accept him was god.
I think the black veil represents guilt, and maybe as a young child he did something wrong, and being a minister he has to deal with whatever he did on a daily basis.
Fear of the unknown is constant with all of the story's that we have read in this unit. I think that this characteristic of the story's is a big part of how gothic the story is.
kind of like what Lindsey said, religion tends to cause corruption and deprecation of other people due to their beliefs and interpretations of what religion tells them to think.
i think that he wont take off the vail because all of his sins will be realeased and he is trying to hide his sins from being noticable to everyone around him
lyndsey... I agree that this is simalair to the crucible but ithink that it is different because there is a weakness in the priest and secrets that the reader didn't know about.
Well the unknown is what builds up the story plot, it is used to keep the reader interested and curious. If someone were to know the unknown the story wouldn't have the same effect. Fear of the unknown is what keeps the people in line but theres almost always someone that isn't afraid or there is someone that knows what the "unknown" truly is
Something i noticed in stories is that the priests in the small towns tend to be more power driven than devoted to serving their true purpose. Why do you think authors portray religious figures to be so corrupted?
I agree with Davonneh that his sins are represented through the black veil and that he does want people to know he did something wrong but that he never wants them to know what is was because then he would be exposed.
When she became afraid of what was under the veil does that mean that she figured out what was under his veil or did she know what his motives were for wearing the veil?
Blake said something that was really good, about the priests in small towns. Usually priests in other stories are shown as huge hipocrites and that they are driven by power and being in charge of everyone else. I think that if your a person representing god your actions show who you really are. they aren't really proving themselves to everyone as godly people.
With what Taylor said, it dehumanizes him. Ithink he is an image, an idea, and symbol but he wanted to be seen as his spirit because that's what was important to him.
I think Blake, that with power, especially those with the power of God, tend to believe that since they have that power at their hands, they see things differently, as well as thinking differently.
Was the death conected to the reason why he wore the veil? Was he conected to the dead because he was wearing the veil? How deep of meaning did the color of the veil have? Why did the townspeople take it in a negative contexted?
I can see what you mean Hannah. Power tends to corrupt a person. I had interpreted money to be the modern version of religious power back in the small towns. It drives people to greed and centers their mind on one thing: more power
i think that black does not represent evil, it represents fear. These people are drawwn to conclusions by a color which shows how much effect a color would have on a community

woohoo!!!
yeah
again with the color black,(crucible, lottery)
I think that black represents those who have done evil deeds. Those who are segregated.
Black is a color that i think is used to hide something
Black always has a conection with something bad in these stories.
well, this is a gothic unit. and people associate black with gothic, so it makes sense.
i think in this story the color black is like a shadow or the part of him that he hides.
I think black veil represent the darkness of what people have inside them.
Black symolizes darkness.

The veil, secrets or not, can create an illusion of deception.

I agree, i think that the color black is evil, dark and danger. It reminds be of night and how everyone is afraid of something.
I think its interesting because in the story the focal point seems to be his face
Why won't he take the veil off
meow
i agree with Jonathan, what about not seeing his face was so disturbing. It said that the girls often wore the veil with bonnets. maybe it was the idea of uncanny.
The black seems to symbolize the gothic parts of the story. Wearing a black veil references to death and that can make people uncomfortable.
Mirror? Does the black vail really symbolize the sin that the minister commited? Does it make the people think about their sins to show that they sin to.
Kristin, I think they focused on his face bbecause it is never seeen and that goes with the uncanny almost.
Agreeing with Sarah in the inner circle, the black veil could represent sins and regret, and so he's proving that everybody has one, they just choose whether to show it or not.
I agree with Adrienne statement about how a veil can make a illusion of deception
Actually, now that I look at it, Does the black represent one who has seen death the most in the community, town?
I agree Blake
I agree with Sarah because I think that he was using it as a metaphor. Was the black vail something bad?
I think that this viel dislocates him from the community but i don't think that he did something bad.
It almost seemed like the veil separated him from the world. Maybe that was the point. To seperate himself from the world so he could be more "holy"
I dont know why he wont take off the black vail wes. I was wondering the same thing if there was a reason that he wore the vail for so long. And if the vail had a bigger meaning than sins.

everyone in the town seems to be affected by little changes that someon would not notice in a bigger town.
They think it's corruption of what is sacred.
Devo... Thats a good question I dont know what it would symbolize in that sense. Because they do wear black but they are supposed to be serving god. It's not ment to be seen as a bad color when nuns and preists wear it.
The smaller the town, the more influence people have from eachother.
I agree that the veil was separated him from the world and he wanted to keep it that way. Maybe the reason that he was a priest was the only person that would accept him was god.
Everybody in these stories are so afraid of change!!
The story reminded me of the crucible in the sense that religion was intertwined with daily life.
I agree. That the unknown leads to corruption and insanity.
Kelsie brings up a good point that when priest and nuns wear black, it's not really a bad color but other time it is construed as a bad color.
Instead of conrtol through fear, it's resistance from fear.
I think the black veil represents guilt, and maybe as a young child he did something wrong, and being a minister he has to deal with whatever he did on a daily basis.
"Eyes are a window to the soul"
He didn't want to see his true self. I agree.
Mallory, I almost hink that goes back to the uncanny because it is familiar tothem and they don't want to see it go away.

I agree with Davonne, I don't think that he wants the town to know his sin or his secret. maybe he just doesn't want the town to barge into his life.
Maybe it does dehumanizes him in the villagers eyes because he isn't like the normal person.
When she became afraid of what was under the veil does that mean that she figured out what was under his veil or did she know what his motives were for wearing the veil?
A simple material thing created a wall and changed his life but did he acomplish the message he was trying to send?

I agree with Davonne, she brings up a good point that black is used frequently to hide things such as his sins.
With what Taylor said, it dehumanizes him. Ithink he is an image, an idea, and symbol but he wanted to be seen as his spirit because that's what was important to him.

blake... i don't think that the corruption is as bad as in the crucible, he does not come off as evil as the one in the crucible
Did he succeed if it was his goal to teach people not to judge by the outside appearance.
I think he did accomplish what he want he want people to think about how there lives have sorrow in it.
