The Devil in the Forest

How do you think Nathaniel Hawthorne would define "evil" based on "Young Goodman Brown"? Do you agree with his definition? Explain your thinking.

I think Hawthorne would define evil as what one might be pressured to do or think when he is influenced by those around him. Goodman Brown struggles in what "path" to take because he is drawn to evil by his peers and those higher than him.

I think Hawthorne would define evil as a source of sorrow or distress. when Goodman Brown found out that evil was in people he though was good, he drawn himself into the evil that was around him. The madness of him losing Faith also had a part of him going to evil.

I think that Hawthorne was defining evil as a depression or grief. I can see on some perspectives of what he means by defining "evil" in such a way because evil can come from all angles in all different ways, shapes, and forms.

I believe that Hawthorne would define the evil as an "escape root." I believe that he did this because of the shock when he realized the different in the people he thought he knew and trusted. This was probably a real shocker, and because of that, he didn't want to believe anything else.

I think that Hawthorne would define evil as someone who is surrounded by evil and if you see evil you think its okay to be evil.
Young Goodman is constantly surrounded by evil which causes him to think that its okay and pursues to be evil along with everyone else around him because he thinks its okay.

I think Hawthorne's definition of evil would be that evil is not always as it seems. Evil can be found in the most unpredictable place, as shown in Young Goodman Brown. Evil can disguise itself and deceive anyone.

I think Hawthorne would define evil as a state of mind. It might not nessacary be something but it might be something that people make up in their head. Goodman Brown has to make a desicion and the evil comes out of him.

I think that Hawthorne would difine evil as people that do bad things to one another. When Goodman found evil in people he thought were good he went crazy. He began to think that people that are evil could be good in other socities. This in the end turned him evil against everyone.

I think that Hawthorne’s perspective of evil is not what one would normally think when they hear that word. For Hawthorne his version of evil seems to be betrayal and sadness. I think that he sees it as evil is not found in one place. Maybe he is also saying that it depends on the person’s point of view on the topic. In this case he made what Faith did equivalent to evil. It seems to me that Hawthorne might make the opinion different in different cases. Goodman felt betrayed so he turned to evil.

think Hawthorne would define evil as a pyshcological thing, something thats in your head, like a state of mind. Anybody can become a victim of it, and it's pretty much unavoidable.

I think Hawthorn would have defined evil as something that is in every person. Even the most unsuspecting people ended up being something completely different. Even Goodman Brown found himself drawn into it.

I think Hawthorne would define evil as things or people that are only evil if you choose to see them as evil. I agree with most of the other students when they say Hawthorne's outlook on evil is a state of mind. It's all in your head. Everyone has the choice to see the good or the evil in life. Most of the time, when you think something or someone is evil, it's a gut feeling. Most of the time, that gut feeling is right. But it's your choice whether to let it scare you are not.

I think Hawthorne would define evil as surrounding oneself with wrong choices or someone who could influence you to do something you normally would never think about doing. Yes I do agree with this definition because I believe that if you surround yourself with bad influences then you are more likely to do whatever it is that others are doing.

i think hawthorne would describe evil as any pressure from others to take the easy way out. anyhting that would make something difficult appear as something else much simplier and easier.

Hawthorne would define evil as something that is in all of us, and can consume anyone at any moment without warning. Evil comes from people we dont expect it from and thought were good.

I agree with Adrienne by saying Hawthorne defines evil as a person under peer pressure and thinking that evil is ok. I do agree with Hawthorne's definition of evil, because if you look at the world around us, peoples behavior is influenced by those who are around them. For example if a child hears their mother or father saying bad words they think it is ok to repeat those bad words because they saw someone they know and follow doing it so it must be alright, even though it may not be.

I agree with Mike I think that Hawthorn showes evil as the easy way out of your task. However I also think he sees evil as "peer presure". I think that evil is different to each person what is evil to one person could be normal to another. Yet I think that evil is shown through peer pressure every day in Middle School and High School. In "Goodman Brown" the main character is preassured into going through this journey and in the end he finds out all of the evil that he has been surounded by.

I believe that hawthorne sees evil as something dark. He refernced darkness a few times; the forest, the clouds, the night. Evil is not only something he fears and does not know, it is something that Threatens him. I beleive that this is somewhat true but, I think that evil is something that wants pain and destruction and hate to prevail as well as something that is non humane and is not in the Human nature.

I think that Hawthorne would define evil as an escape form the reality of his saddness, sorrow and greaving. Goodman Brown saw evil within other people than himself. And then he was struggling to move on and get rid of all of the evil that was taking over his life.

I think Hawthorne would define evil as being in the eye of the beholder. It is a person's choice to be evil and although people are influenced by their surroundings, the final result or outcome is up to that person.

I really like Devo's comment about people being surrounded by evil and how that makes evil okay for them, it really shows how evil is in the eye of the beholder. So is evil not just what society opposes.
