So what does Fitzgerald mean when he says holocaust? What does it symbolize?

SaraB2009 said...

O hey!

Hannah D said...

What characteristics make gatsby symbolize hope?

MandyN said...

Why was Gatsby so great?

MandyN said...

O hey sara! lol.

mikee said...

I'm thinking that it symblizes the death of cheating, due to the fact that there will be no other people left in the chain of affairs.

KatieM2009 said...

Gatsby was great but only by image. He had all the grand parties and gave someone to talk about. Also, I personally think he was great because he lived this part of his life for love and just wanted to follow his heart. He never ment to hurt anyone and just wanted to be with the love of his life.

Emily A said...

I think the title is "The Great Gatsby" because even though Gatsby was a common man, he learned a ton of money, gave hope to others, and even in the end he wasn't afraid of death or what came to him. I think that Gatsby being willing to take the blame for Daisy was heroic.

Unknown said...

It seems like Gatsby lived his whole life waiting for Daisy. On pg. 169 he "paid a high price for living too long with a single dream". This line is saying that Gatsby wasted away his life only wanting Daisy.

Lauren L said...

Nick reminds me of one of those people who just goes a long with everything and tries not to get involved.

brian h. said...

I think Gatsby was so great because he lived for one purpose and this dictated every part of his life. And everybody who comes to his parties is almost living through him.

Hannah D said...

So in other words, Gatsby seens to represent images. And that can make you think about others through image. Is that really who they are in real life?

SaraB2009 said...

Brian... I think it symbolizes all of these deaths are spreading like fire and this is complete destruction not just by the people comitting these crimes, but how this time period effects these people.

Taylor H said...

i think the Great Gatsby stands for his legacy that he left with Nick. He was a man of many unknowns and little structure in his life but Nick began to grow with Gatsby until his life was ended

chris c said...

maybe fitzgerald uses the word holocaust in the book because since the definition means completely burnt he wants the reader to know that pretty much the story line is burnt out and everything is winding down now.

Unknown said...

I agree with Mike and I think thats what the holocaust was. Since Myrtle is dead Tom and Wilson can't have her anymore and Wilson is dead as well. Since Gatsby is dead, Daisy doesn't have him as a distraction. So Tom and Daisy end up together just like they were supposed to when they married.

mikee said...

Lauren, I think you make a good point about Nick. He is always drawn back, and withdrawn from these intense situations.

Lauren L said...

Is Nick really a good friend though? He knows everything thats going on and he doesnt tell anyone. I would do what he does though because it causes less drama and keeping secrets is being a good friend!

KatieM2009 said...

How will Daisy handle the death of Gatsby?

Kristin M said...

I agree with Katie, I think that Gatsby was a great image when he had all these parties in his big house.

brian h. said...

Sara, what are some of the effects of the time period on their lives?

MandyN said...

I think that Gatsby was great because everything evolved around him. He started out being a mysterious, superior character but then he kind of lost it with his relationship with Daisy. He changed my out look on him completely.

brian h. said...

Katie, I think Daisy will not be affected by Gatsby's death. She didn't even take the time to call him, so she is over him now. It was almost like a fad to her.

mikee said...

Kate, Daisy will i think feel almost relieved that Gatsby is gone in one sense because there will no longer be any tension with Tom.

Hannah D said...

I think that image is important. But when you look more at it, and gatsby, he seems to be revolving around the image, to escape from his reality that he fears to confront.

Emily A said...

I think that Tom is the one that told Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle and once he knew that Wilson was going to go after Gatsby, Tom decided to take Daisy and move somewhere else in order for her not to find out about his death and that way Tom wouldn't have to see how Daisy was react to Gatsby's death. I think Tom would be afraid that Daisy would feel even more for Gatsby and then she would confess to killing Myrtle.

MandyN said...

Katie, I either think that Daisy will take it really hard or kind of move on because he still has Tom. It seems like she cares but not enough.

Kristin M said...

I don't think Gatsby wanted to hurt anyone, but he was the one hurt in the end. I think Gatsby changed everything for her, and would do anything for her.

Unknown said...

Katie- I think that Tom and Daisy ran away and that Daisy will never even find out about Gatsby's death. Investigators will probably find Gatbsy guilty for Myrtle's death since Wilson killed him and he has the car that hit her and since he is dead Daisy will not get into trouble.

KatieM2009 said...

Ya Daisy might have been over Gatsby at this point but if she really did love him in the past or recently, wouldnt you think that she would be some what affected by his death?

SaraB2009 said...

Brian... i related this to fitzgarled's life and how everyone is trying to be what other people want them to be and after a while it gets to people and things like murders start to happen.

Lauren L said...

I agree with Wes she doesnt really know what she wants and she just flutters around because being without a guy is weird to her. Sometimes I think she is truly in love with Gatsby but sometimes I dont and I think she is with Gatsby just to make Tom mad because she knows hes cheating on her with Myrtle.

chris c said...

i think Daisy will definetly et hurt but i think that its for the better becuase now that gatsby is dead she can give all her love and devotion towards Tom.

Taylor H said...

Gatsby would obviously do anything for Daisy because he is now dead because of the conflict he created when he told tom of his love for Daisy.

MandyN said...

Emily, I agree with you, or it might be that Tom was maybe looking at the car and wilson might have saw him. Or tom might have wanted revenge and told Wilson.

Unknown said...

Gatsby said he would take blame for the murder and would do anything for Daisy and he definenltly did even though it was a little involuntary.

Kristin M said...

I like the quote Julie found, I think it is the perfect quote for his life. He waited for basically nothing.

MadisonF said...

I don't know, I think Daisy will be effected by Gatsby's death becuase he's not going to be there anymore. No matter if you like or dislike the person you still feel bad or lost without that person in the world

KatieM2009 said...

Wow Julie, I didnt even think that they might have ran away together!! Thinking about it, it sounds like a high possibilty because Wilson was in the cheating situation and he wanted to take Myrtle and run away so I definiatly think that could be a possabilty.

brian h. said...

Katie, I don't think Daisy ever really loved Gatsby. She was just after him for his money. Money runs her life. If she really loved him, she wouldn't have left him and married Tom.

Hannah D said...

I'm still confused, did wilson kill gatsby?

Unknown said...

Poor Gatsby. He only wanted Daisy and he ends up dead.

SaraB2009 said...

I think it is kind of ironc how in earlier chapters everyone was concerned that Gatsby was a murderer and there were rumors like that, but in the end he was the one who was murder and he didnt kill anyone.

Unknown said...

Hannah- yes Wilson killed Gatsby and then killed himself.

MandyN said...

Hannah, yes Wilson did kill Gatsby. I was confused to.

chris c said...

yeah I think Wilson goes to Tom to find out who was driving in the car because it says that wilson saw tom driving that car earlier but knows it was Tom becuase he drove up to the crime scene in another car.

Lauren L said...

Daisy uses Gatsby to make Tom mad because Gatsby is one guy that seems to match up to Toms status even though Gatsby is truly in love with Daisy I dont think anyone really knows what true love is.

KatieM2009 said...

Brain- I think Daisy at one point had some feelings for Gatsby. I think we dont give Daisy enough credit. She is always looked down upon but she is still human and has feelings. Even if she didnt love Gatsby she probably still had some sort of feeling, whether thats friendly or otherwise, and she will feel sad.

mikee said...

Julie, I know that he only wanted to be with Daisy, but he did dwell to much in the past, and then he got into a bad situation where he was not going to be the one to win her over.

Kristin M said...

Its almost like Gatsby wasted away his life.

MandyN said...

I still wonder how Wilson figured out it was Gatsby?

Lauren L said...

YOPYOP YOP

Lauren L said...

Tom and Daisy were meant to be together because both their secret lovers died.

MadisonF said...

responding to kistren, i think that he was losing him mind so therefore he was losing himself and the he loves Daisy.

mikee said...

Mandy, I think it was because he saw his car.

Unknown said...

Lauren- I agree with you. The cycle of cheating went full circle and brought Tom and Daisy back together.

MandyN said...

lauren, I don't think that they were meant to be together. I think that they just don't have anybody else so they are together.

MandyN said...

O ok. Thanks mike.

Hannah D said...

Mandy, so is this story written as an act of desperation from desperate people?

MadisonF said...

in a way i agree with Lauren. i think that tom and daisy are good for each other becuase of what they lost, but there aren't in love with each other. They both are in love with someone else.

mikee said...

Any time

Unknown said...

I agree with the inner circle that Gatsby wanted Daisy because he knew he could never have her. It was like a game, his "single dream".

MandyN said...

Hannah, I dont think so because even though Gatsby was desperate to be with Daisy this story was just about lovers and heart breakers.

mikee said...

I think that Gatsby's love for Daisy is not quite genuine, and i think he has made her up to be more than she really was. He was in love with the image of Daisy that he had in his head.

MandyN said...

I agree with Julie, everybody wants what they can't have.

Hannah D said...

Mandy, thanks. That clears up my confusion on that topic.

Kristin M said...

I agree with Julie, I think that after all the cheating Gatsby and Daisy were meant to be together.

brian h. said...

I don't think any of them were made for each other because all the relationships are about wealth. That is all that makes the people like each other. They are all fake. The only person that I think really has a love for someone else is Gatsby.

MandyN said...

No prob hannah! lol.

Kristin M said...

I agree with Mike, I think Gatsby was in love with the thought of Daisy, not the real Daisy.

MandyN said...

I agree with brian but I think that Nick wanted to find somebody but he was caught up in helping Gatbsy.

Emily A said...

I think that Gatsby's only dream was Daisy, but I think that while trying to get her, he was able to live and have everything. However, it wasn't enough for him. I felt so bad that Daisy didn't go back to Gatsby. I felt as if he knew he was going to die, but didn't care because he had nothing left to live for.

Unknown said...

Kristin- Do you mean Tom and Daisy were meant to be together?

MadisonF said...

I agree with Julie's comment. but i think that Daisy and Gatsby's love for each other is in the past and they cant go back to that like becuase of what has happened end now in their lives. Daisy is married and wont leave Tom, but she still loves Gatsby. I don't know for sure but i don't think anything more can happen between their relationships except for friendship.

jordanrg said...

The end of chapter 9 leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, Gatsby has died, one feels like Daisy betrayed him, Jordan leaves NIck in the dust, Tom reasurts himself as a jerk and a liar.
One also learns that Tom told Wilson that about the car, and this led to Wilson's death.

brian h. said...

Mandy, I agree. I wasn't including Nick into this whole relationship circle because he is almost on the outside of them.

MandyN said...

I agree with Emily. I honestly don't think that Daisy ever wanted to get back with Gatbsy. She didn't even go to Gatsby's funeral or send anything. Did she even care?

jordanrg said...

In response to the question, Nick was a good guy, or at least he is portrayed as that way, it is very random when Jordan talks about how he was unhonest and how he broke promises. What was her point in that?

Unknown said...

Jordan- this blog is just on chapter 8!

Kristin M said...

Brian-You don't think anyone is really in love?

Emily A said...

I agree with Eric, because Nick was a good character because he seemed honest and truly cared about his friends and family. He also didn't let the rumors affect his view of Gatby, but he got to know him before he made any accusations. Do you think that if Nick and Jordan would have become a real couple, would Nick have cheated on her or stayed loyal?

Hannah D said...

So Brian. Saying that non of them belonged together. Where they actually blinded by wealth and greed?

jordanrg said...

The reason that it is the valley of ashes and it is constantly so hot, and the eyes are looking down on you is because it is like judgement, and punnishment, or hell.

MadisonF said...

Adding on to Emily'e comment, i also think that daisy not going with Gatsby was horrible, but i feel like she didn't have a choice. Because of the time era and the expectations of the women.
