The title of the story is The Great Gatsby so, What makes Gatsby so great?

Hannah L said...

Why would jorden marry another man?

mikee said...

Dreams are a good thing to live by.

brian h. said...

What does make Gatsby great?

eric said...

Gatsby was great because he stood out from the crowd and did the right the most of the time

Emily A said...

I was very surprised no one came to Gatsby's funeral. I think that through this it demonstrates that people only liked Gatsby because of his money. I thought it was really sweet that his dad came to his funeral and was so proud of him!

kelsieb said...

What made Gatsby great? Why did no one show up to the Great Gatsby's funeral?

Janae said...

I think what made Gatsby great was that he try to go for his dream even though he failed he didn't give up

chris c said...

I think jordan would marry someone else becuase it seemed that nick never really paid that much attention to her.

eric said...

Because of Gatsby's "Greatness", does that make all the other characters not great?

brian h. said...

But Emily, the reason Gatsby's father was proud of him was that he had a huge house and a lot of money.

Hannah L said...

Gatsby needs to do everything in a big elaborate way. He so many big secrets weighing him down. Also he was the only character in the story besides Nick that didn't just care about himself.

mikee said...

Emily, I personally wasn't suprised that there was noone at his funeral. He never got close to anyone and people only liked him for his parties.

SaraB2009 said...

You know how Gatsby said his whole family had died? was his family really not dead? Did gatsby lie?

Unknown said...

Why did Gatsby lie before and say that his family had died and he had gotten the inheritance. Obviously they weren't dead since his dad came to the funeral.

ryan f said...

I agree with Blake becasue its the people that surrond you that classify a person as great or not. Since his father was proud of him, you could consider him great.

kelsieb said...

One thing that sticks in my mind is what Mrs. Summers said about Gatsby was so determined and never let anyone get in his way of his dreams. Even though everyone around him was struggling to find out what they really wanted.

eric said...

I agfee with Amy's comment about the green light that it represents his jealousy...

Janae said...

i think no one really show up because he really didn't have any close friend and people just though Gatsby party where a place they can get away from there problems

WesL said...

I think that gatsby shows the prime example of a dreamer, even though his dreams failed

TaylorS2009 said...

I think Gatsby was so great because he stuck to what he believed in. He didn't really mold into society like everyone else. He never really liked his parties, they were just a tool to get what he wanted, Daisy.

SaraB2009 said...

...because his dad was at his funeral

MadisonF said...

I think that Gatsby was great becuase he stood out form everyone else. He was everyone's role model.

Hannah D said...

What is their definition of great back then? Was life back than so predictable, that they wanted a change, a change like Gatsby?

Emily A said...

Pat- I think that the reason the book is called "The Great Gatsby" is because through Gatsby's life, everyone knows him for his great parties, but no one knows how he was only throwing them to get the attention of his true love. I think this makes him great because he was so willing to hold out for what he truly wants and that takes a really strong person to stay strong for that long.

kelsieb said...

Mike I agree with you about the fact that no one really liked Gatsby for him. Even at his parties everyone just gossiped about him and he never let anyone close to him.

Unknown said...

Why did Nick break up with Jordan when on page 186 he "Angry, and half in love with her, and tremendously sorry, I turned away."

eric said...

I think he was in love with her as a person, but also the image that she had of herself probab ly helped him to fall back in love with her

brian h. said...

Julie, I think Gatsby lied because he wanted to make a good impression on Nick in order to get to know Daisy through him. He couldn't get to Daisy without Nick.

mikee said...

Kelsie, You make a very good point, and I agree with you in the sense that Gatsby knew exactly what he wanted, and nothing was going to get in his way.

MadisonF said...

I cant believe that none of Gatsby's friends went to his funeral. Why do you think nobody went?

Hannah L said...

I agree with you Emily that takes a great deal of courage to come back into your sons life under such horrible times.

Pat said...

I agree with janae, I think the whole point of the story is to follow your dreams and thats exactly what Gatsby did. I think Fitzgerald was assoiating great with Gatsby to feed the message people need to follow their dreams.

WesL said...

Good book! gatsby is great

KatieM2009 said...

Kelsie- I agree with you and mike. They werent really his friends. They just pretended to like him and go to his parties because it gave them something to talk about and something to do around town.

kelsieb said...

Eric I agree with you and Amy as well. I think that the light represents jelousy as well however what is the deeper meaning of the green light? The light came up more than once throughout the book.

Emily A said...

Mike- yes his dad was proud of him for his money, but I think he was proud that he could provide such a rich life for himself. Maybe his dad knew he couldn't give Gatsby all of that so he is happy that Gatsby became so high in society.

Hannah D said...

What does that tell you about 'human nature', if all was demonstrated at Gatsby's parties, were that his guests would talk about him always behind his back?

MandyN said...

Kelsie, I think that Nick broke up with Jordan because i think that he realied that she is like everybody else. She also didnt go to Gatsby's funeral so I think that told Nick something about her.

Hannah L said...

I think that no one went to his funeral because people just used him to get into the partys and be involoved in the fast paced life.

Unknown said...

I also noticed that on pg. 176 Gatsby's dad's last name is Gatz. Did Gatsby change his last name so that he wouldn't be associated with his family?

kelsieb said...

Why do you think that Gatsby and Wilson were so alike in their "ghostlyness"? What is the irony there that the person who killed Gatsby was the one character who was most similar to himself?

eric said...

What happens when you don't reach your dreams? What does that make you? What does that make of the people in the story in this situation

KatieM2009 said...

Madison- no one went to Gatsby's funeral because no one really liked him or cared about him. He was just another topic of gossip to everyone but in reality no one really connected with him on a personal level.

SaraB2009 said...

I still want to know why this was called the GREAT Gatsby. Was it a satiricle title for the book?

MandyN said...

Julie, I am not sure about his dad's name but I did have a question about his father calling Gatsby jimmy. or something like that. I was kind of confused.

Unknown said...

I agree with everyone that says that Gatsby is great because his dad was proud of him. On pg. 176 his dad says, "If he'd have lived he would have been a great man."

mikee said...

Hannah I think it says that people assume the worst of people, whether they know them or not. It could also be that people are simply creating entertainment for themselves by gossiping and making up stories about people.

Pat said...

relating to the discusion, I believe Gatsby was striving for wealth and image more than trying to get Daisy. Daisy was just the person pursuing Gatsby's dream.

brian h. said...

Hannah, I think that shows that we are all shallow in our own ways. We all have done something for no reason. Gatsby was the only person in the book who always had a reason for what he did. That is why he is so great. Everybody else does things for no reason. Gatsby didn't.

ryan f said...

Madison-No one went to Gatsby's funeral becasue he put on a social face when he threw his parties, yet he closed himself from many, with the exception of Nick. Gatsby was so consumed with the past and Daisy that he had no desire to create a future for himself.

KatieM2009 said...

Eric- I think if you still try and reach your dreams it still makes you great but if you just sit back watch the world pass you by then your not truley living life. Sometimes dreams are unrealistic or not obtainable but I think if you still try then thats just as good as reaching the dream.

MandyN said...

Eric, I think that Gatsby kind of conquered some of his dreams but was left without knowing. He didnt ever really know if he got Daisy.

Emily A said...

I was surprised that Nick and Jordan broke up because they seemed to really like each other, but I can also see a connection between "The Great Gatsby" and "Winter Dreams" because both Nick, Gatsby, and Dexter lost someone they loved.

Unknown said...

Way back to Hannah L's comment. I don't think that Jordan was actually engaged and that she just told Nick that to hurt him when he broke up with her. "When I had finished she told me that she was engaged to another man. I doubted that though there were several she could have married..."

Pat said...

I have always viewed yellow of being the color of jelousy which was the color Fitzgerald used a lot with Tom.

WesL said...

I think that the green light represents hope and a dream. It is across the bay so he cannot get to it but he can see it.

Unknown said...

Referring to Gatsby's dream, "He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night". I wonder where he left his dream. The place is described but I don't know where it is.

mallorym said...

I thought the green ligh represented the jealousy, envy, and secrets throughout the book.

SaraB2009 said...

The empty house symbolizes the fact that Gatsby died and his house use to be full of life and now that he is not a live neither is his house.

JonathanB said...

When Nick leaves Gatsbys house that to me symbolizes Nicks goodbye to Gatsby. He misses his friend and somewhat the mentor he loved. The way that Nick reacts in chapter 9 to me is kind of heart breaking, he has to go on now by himself without any kind of guidence brought on to him by another. So now his life is his own and he can't relate it to anothers. Ironically enough to me Gatsby isn't the great one, it's Nick. The man who walked under Gatsbys shadow.

MandyN said...

"And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsbys's wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy's dock." (Fitzgerald 180). I like this quote because it shows a man chasing after his dreams and honeslty living in an unkown world, with many mysteries.

LyndseyB said...

"He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in the vast obscurity beyond the city..." The green light I think is the hope of a better life. I think you should always hope for the future but you can't live in the past. That was Gatsby's fatal mistake.

TaylorS2009 said...

The quote "Gatsby believed in the green light...It eludes us then, but that's no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms farther..." Pg 189 gave an actual image of hope and the desire to pursure one's dreams. I think this quote encompasses the question, "Why is Gatsby so great?"

eric said...

The green light represents the hope that Gatsby had for his life. Although most of it didn't come true he still made a mark in peoples lives.

Hannah D said...

It seems that it was an overall summary of what happened, and a reflection.

KatieM2009 said...

"Gatsby believed in the green light" This light seemed to the be the symbol of Daisy and his feelings for her. As their relationship died so did that light. This light was just a symbol for the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby.

Emily A said...

"Gatsby's house was still empty when I left- the grass on his lawn had grown as long as mine. One of the taxi drivers in the village never took a fare past the enterance gate without stopping for a minute and pointing inside." I think that this is important because Gatsby's house was always so crazy and busy, but now I feel as if without Gatsby life has no meaning beacuse he makes everything full of life.

MandyN said...

I agree with eric. Also, the green light was with Daisy's house kind of representing his love for Daisy and his hope of maybe being together.

mikee said...

"...The grass on his lawn had grown as long as mine"(188). This is Nick finally realizing that Gatsby is gone and it really hits him hard. I think Nick hadn't really grasped the fact that Gatsby is not coming back.

brian h. said...

"...and didn't know that the party was over."
I like the fact that he uses the word party. Everything that has happened is part of a party. And now that all the drama is finished, the party is over.

MadisonF said...

I think that its ironic that at the beginning Gatsby was shown as this great person but in reality he wasn't. Its a forshadow on the end, how nobody went to his funeral becuase he wasn't great, he was just a normal guy.

Pat said...

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us." I think this quote sums up the whole book. I believe Gatsby was following his dreams and in the end his hope ran out. Society in the 1920's corrupted him and made his dream harder to pursue. The 1920's killed Gatsby before he could reach his dream.

Lauren L said...

The quote that I chose was "He had come a long way to this blue lawnand his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it." This quote means a lot at the end because it shows he was different then everyone else and his life was a huge goal and he didnt let anyone or anything stop him.

Hannah L said...

So we beat on, boats against the current borne back ceaselessly into the past. (fitzgerald 180) Does this quote mean that people will always look into the past for comfort? I noticed that the ocean and the currents seem to be telling Nick that it is time to move on and someday Nick will look back and understand, but now Nick just needs to get on with his life. Nick should use this tradgedy to teach himself about the fact that there are people that just care about themselves and it is important to watch out for them.

Kristin M said...

"And as I sat there, brooding on the old unknown world, I thought of Gatsby's wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy's dock." I think this quote is perfect because it summarizes the whole book, and sends the message that you can have all the money in the world, and still not be happy.

ryan f said...

The quote "He had come a long wat to this blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly failed to grasp it" is so vivid and I can picture a flowing deep blue sea that acts as a barrier towards Gatsby's dreams. I see the "blue lawn" as being so smooth, yet proved as a symbol of Gatsby's relationship with Daisy.

chris c said...

Gatsby was so great becuase not only did he chase his dreams but he also made it to his dreams and surpassed them without really knowing it. He was just so fast paced

Janae said...

"Gatsby believed in the green light,"
I think the green light represent the hope and that they there a good thing you have something to believe in. I also think that green represent greedy and money. So Gatsby want to hold on to the past that show greedy towards his past and to get want he want by using money for power and in it all Gatsby had hope.

MadisonF said...

i think that nick was the narrator becuase he was the one who knew Gatsby best and was his only real friend

kelsieb said...

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter-to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...and one fine morning-" I chose this because I think that Fitzgerald is trying to show that Gatsby effected Nicks life by showing him how to live for a dream and to never give up.

drewb12 said...

I agree with Kelsey on that one.
