I think one of the biggest themes in this story is the reaction of the people in the village to change. I think the people reacted in the wrong way when the man started to wear the black vail and they were the ones who ended up sinning because they judged him.
I think the the minister wears the dark veil so show that his outlook on life is very evil and dark. I think he got caught in the dark points of life and showed this by wearing a dark veil.
like what the inner circle said, does he believe that"evil" or the "devil" is everywhere so he just decided to see everything and everyone for what they really are, "dark"??
I think he was trying to show the town that apperence isn't everything, he was trying to make a statement, but apperence to them is too important to look past.
I changed my mind... I think that the veil is more representive the way that he sees the world and maybe he doesn't neccessarily have an actual and literall black veil on.
i think the meaning of the black veil is kinda how in the old days people would wear black veils at funerals. so it would simbolize morning and sorrow.
Did anyone notice that the author kept refering to the minister's mouth? As in, that was the only thing you could see because the veil was covering the rest of his face. DO you think this is significant? Perhaps the author is refering to people and what they say in socitey in regards to hiding your true self or pretending to be someone else. Eva, i agree wit you in the way that you can see a persons soul through their eyes. But a persons mouth doesnt show that much into a person. You can lie with you mouth not your eyes.
Everyone thought it was the Reverend that sinned and did the wrong thing but it was actually the people of the town and the society that sinned and that was the lesson he wanted them to learn.
I think his mouth is visible because to get to know someone, you must spend time with that person and listen to thier words and what they have to say. Even thought the vail is a statment to not judge on outter apperence, if the town really wnated to know him and who he was, his mouth was open and ready to tell them. By shwing his mouth, i see it almost as an open door.
Has anyone ever noticed that a friend changes their behavior radically? Maybe because they realized a wrong and thought that the only way to fix it or to change was to start with himself. There is a saying about change starts with one. Maybe the minister realized that he has been living in the wrong and the veil was his behavior. Maybe he need to speak to people without using words. There is another saying there. Actions speak louder than words. Sometimes not saying anything is the best decision. I just though of that. It could be percieved as completely random.
well a veil doesn't make your perspective clearer, or make it easier to see. it distorts your view, so why would it make him see the ways of society better
Maybe his mouths important because its veil are the lies and stuff that comes out of the mouth vs. the eyes which you can not hide the truth from as easily.
Did you know that when you lie you tend to look to the left because that is the imaginative side of your brain, and when you tell the truth you look to the right because that is the memory side of your brain.

I personally thought that the veil was a metaphore for evil. I think that by having the veil be black it helped demonstrate this

Veils are usually related to weddings or cultural beleifs, why would he wear a veil if it wasn't part of either of these?
I think that it represents a mask that the society puts on to hide who they truely are and how they really feel.
The message that he wanted to send was to not judge people because of their physical apearance and it showed what the Puritans are really like.

Because the veil makes everything darker, does he see things in life darker/sadder or worse?
He may have done this to get people to not judge on physical apperance, but it eventualy made the people judge him more.
Catie. Sometimes people wear black veils at weddings so many thats why he was wearing it. He was trying to show that he was mourning something.

i agree with that but i also think the veil has more siginficane to it then just hiding from people jugding him
