I noticed how most of the story was the ladies talking about Emily and how much they were gossiping, it kind of reminded me of high school.

smm said...

I feel like the people in the town wanted to see the inside of her house because she had always been the mystery of the town. The person they all gossiped about. Like Sara said, "they were all fasanated by here." Maybe because Emily was different and didn't follow the norm living. People were curious of why she lived like that, and wanted to know more.

PatrickD said...

haha high school..... hmmmmm

Stephanie C said...

I think her house smelled bad because at the end I think it says that there was a dead person in it. That room that had not been opened for like 40 years had someone lying in the bed. I think..

NacaridS said...

I did not get the ending. Who was the man in the bed?

smm said...

I like what stephanie said about the girls gossiping and how it was like high school. All the boys liked her, and i think the girls were all jelous, which is why they talked about her and the guys just always liked and wanted to help her.

Catie Stacey said...

I think that the house smelt bad because the guy was decomposing on her bed...gross. But I think the author said this first because he was jumping back and forth between the present and past.

PatrickD said...

yeah i agree the smell of death is a very unusual and curious smell as i understand it

Brianne D. said...

I think the dead man in the bed was Homer Barron, her sweetheart. Did she kill him?

Catie Stacey said...

The man in the bed was the Homer Barron guy

hilary l said...

No one in the town had a good heart towards Emily. Everyone put pity on her but they also used her. They didnt care if she felt back about them going into her house and fixing the smell and they didnt care if she would kill herself. They thought that it would be best for her if she just died. They also gossiped about her a lot.

Barry Tischler said...

i think the man in the bed is either the negro or maybe her father

smm said...

Maybe she just feel into depression after the death of her father and her boyfriend left her. Thats why she secluded herself from the world.

Nick Z said...

Yea a decomposing dead guy lying in a house for years will probably make it smell pretty bad.

To Mrs. Leclaire's question:
I think that the author was empahsizing her apperence after her father died to show the massive effects that the death had on her. Also, maybe she had a mental breakdown and it showed her true self and stopped caring what other people thought about her.

Andrew L said...

the man in the bed was homer

Barry Tischler said...

guys, the smell of death isn't curious, it's awful. rotting meat and bad egs times five

Catie Stacey said...

I totally think that Emily killed Homer because he was gay and was going to leave and so she killed him with the rat poison so i guess he could be with her forever.

carlys said...

If the man in the bed was Homer, who caused the head indent on the pillow next to him?

NacaridS said...

Why will she kill him?

Margaret_O'B said...

She may have killed him with the rat poison because I think she lost her mental stableness but I don't think that she killed her father.

ayarger said...

i dont think that she killed homer.
but idk why she baught all of the arson stuff.

PatrickD said...

can we agree that it was homer or is there any other evidence other wise

hilary l said...

I think that Emily killed her father as well as Homer and that is why she stayed in her house for so long. She became crazy after the deaths. They thought that Homer just ran away from her but i think she killed him instead.

JohnS said...

I think high school is a good conection. Because, every one wants to fit in and gossip can make a person want to change wich could lead to more gossip, I think.

Catie Stacey said...

I agree with Maggie. And Im not sure that the smell of death really matters that much...

NacaridS said...

Do you guys think she loved Homer?

Stephanie C said...

It kind of sounded like she was just an old lady that was grumpy and didn't want to be out wondering in the world. I don't think its not normal that she wanted to be so secluded from the world, especially after her dad died and her lover didn't marry her.

Brianne D. said...

I think that Emily was uncanny because she was a familiar person that we can realte with like a beautiful young lady and then an old lady. But then there is something unfamiliar about her because she was a little creepy because she wanted poison and she might have killed Homer.

JohnS said...

Emily has some serious issues.

Margaret_O'B said...

I thnk that it was after her father's death she became crazy and was afraid of losing anyone else and so she killed himer to keep him close and never lose him.

Catie Stacey said...

I think Brianne is right. Everyone can relate to Emily because of the age transition ahe goes through in the story.

hilary l said...

I think the bad smell was the smell of the dead bodies that she kept in the upstairs.

carlys said...

I think that she loved Homer and was hurt when he left after so long. What I don't understand is if Homer left her in the first place, how did she get him to come back?

Nick Z said...

Maybe Emily wanted to kill Homer because he had said that he was not a marrying man.

Barry Tischler said...

i think we are supposed to consider the possibility that she killed him, but not just automatically accept it as true

Andrew L said...

So then where did all to bodies come from??

Catie Stacey said...

Was Homer for sure gay?

Barry Tischler said...

well obviously somebody killed him, jut maybe not EMILY

PatrickD said...

your eyes lie a lot.... i dont agree with the statment that every thing you see is truth

Catie Stacey said...

who else would have killed him without Emily flipping out?

hilary l said...

I think the servant became brain washed by Emily and he was afraid to be killed by her so he did everything she said.

Stephanie C said...

At the end when it talks about the gray hair and the indentation of a head on the pillow next to the dead person, who do you think was laying there? Emily?

carlys said...

What does this story have to do with the title A Rose for Emily? What does it have to do with a rose?

Barry Tischler said...

yeah patrick is right, optical illusions? lieing eyes? hello

Catie Stacey said...

Why didn't the servant guy stick around? And where do you think he went?

PatrickD said...

nick makes a good point maybe if she couldnt have homer in life because i wasnt a marrying man then she would have him in death

Catie Stacey said...

Why didn't the servant guy stick around? And where do you think he went?

JohnS said...

Well many times when a fan is in love with a celebrity so much that it drives them to kill them, like what happened to John Lennon.

Margaret_O'B said...

Ya I agree with Patrick because a lot of people see what they want to see. No one wants to see that a little old lady is a mass murderer or something and no one wants to get mixed up in that.

Barry Tischler said...

probably emily lying there, and you bring flowers to graves for dead people, so that probably has something to do with the title

Brianne D. said...

I was wondering why this story was named "A Rose for Emily". And this might be a little strech, but I was thinking that Homer was her rose and roses dont last forever they eventually die like Homer did.

Catie Stacey said...

I agree with maggie, who would want to get involved with a old lady serial killer, "misery" much?

Barry Tischler said...

necrophelia, weird much

Stephanie C said...

I think her sleeping with the dead guy represents that she wants someone to be there for her even if it means sleeping next to a dead person. Maybe she just felt safe or comfortable.

KylaS. said...

I agree with Eva with the Homer character. She really didnt want to be alone she needed someone and when he told he didnt want to marry she kind of didnt want to beleive it

Catie Stacey said...

Do you think Emily was in denial of Homer dying? Thats why she kept her around?

Barry Tischler said...

well that doesn't make much sense to me. you would think being near corpses inspires fear, like the uncanny thing. death is scary, not comforting

JohnS said...

I think that there is a moral in this story, it might be that over protective parenting can mess up a person. Or some thing like that.

Barry Tischler said...

well if she killed him, how could she deny his death.

hilary l said...

Emily killed Homer because she didnt want to lose him because she knew he wanted to leave her. She already lost her father and she had no one else to be with so she became afraid and poisoned Homer so she could keep him forever.

Catie Stacey said...

If overprotective parents are the cause of Emily going psycho, I think a lot of us are in trouble.

carlys said...

I agree with Allison, in saying that she has a hard time dealing with death. She doesn't know or accept that her father is dead, and she also feels the need to keep the body and possesions of whoever was in the bed.

smm said...

answer to question: why is it called a rose for emily?

i thought of the song take a bow. cause its like her end bow, she rose one last time. or at a funeral, you bring people flowers, its like the end, the goodbye, good wishes. one final goodbye.

JohnS said...

Mabey its called "A Rose for Emilye" because a rose might represent guys trying to ask her out and her chance to a normal life. Or something.

Barry Tischler said...

it may be kind of like a pun. a rose for emily could be a pun that someone or something AROSE for emily. what that something is, i dont know

JohnS said...

I agrea with Sarah.

Barry Tischler said...

oh now we have necrophelia AND incest. creepy

NacaridS said...

May be she did not kill Homer when she was 30. May be he was living in the house for all this years but not because he wanted to but because she made him. And may be he died because he was old and she was not strong enough to tell other people that he was dead. and thats why the gray hair was in the pillow.

If she killed Homer why would the servant not say some thing to the towns people?

JohnS said...

Last thoughts, mabey its like she doesn't want to move on, like she wouldn't het over Homer, so she wouldn't move on to Adulthood and paying taxes is part of that.
