Chapter 3

BenE said...

Yay!

JonathanB said...

hello

Unknown said...

drunk driving is bad.

Pat said...

hi

Hannah L said...

I do not understan what happened with the car was it important?

drewb12 said...

Why was this chapter so random?

kelsieb said...

I thought that guy who thought that his car was just out of gas and not that the wheel of his car had fallen off.

Pat said...

I agree with the drunk driving statement

LyndseyB said...

What do you think Gatsby was talking to Jordan about?

WesL said...

It is very wierd that Mr. gatsby did not drink at all and he just observed the guests.

Janae said...

I don't think the car was important.

Unknown said...

I agree with Wes... that is very suspicious. I wonder what Gatsby is doing. Does he have a job?

eric said...

I agree with Kelsie because i didn't find any text that he knew of the wheel being off

Kristin M said...

It was odd that Gatsby had several parties, but he didn't drink. Why was this?

KatieM2009 said...

I don't understand why people would have fake books in a library. What is the point to that?

Unknown said...

Who was the drunk guy in the library?

ChrisC said...

yeah you think that since Gatsby throws these parties every week you would think its becuase he likes to party and not becuase he likes to watch his guests

Pat said...

I think this chapter gets more involved with Gatsby to show how distant he realy is. Personaly i feel like Gatsby is a symbol of how fake people were in the 1920's was it?

Unknown said...

I agree with Sara and Amy... these people don't seem to be doing anything with their lives other than partying.

WesL said...

I think maybe that the war ghanged both Gatsby and nick and that is why they share a point of view on life.

eric said...

A lot of talk about alcohol is coming up, do you think this is the basic "fuel for the fire"? Is this what causes these people to be who they are

LyndseyB said...

It seems kind of odd that Gatsby just observed like Wes said. He didn't seem very involved with the guest and was unusually interested that all the guest had a good time. ONe of Jordan's friends said that she once ripped her dress and Gatsby sent her a new one. I don't know if this is just rumor, or showing how much Gatsby cares about public opinion.

KatieM2009 said...

Maybe Gatsby is just trying to learn more about is guests or trying to find something out that we don't know yet. There must be something he is trying to find out by having these parties and staying sober. If he is sober then he can observe the surroundings.

JonathanB said...

i think they aren't really sophisticated enough to actually have read all of their books. it's like in beauty and the beast when the beast shows belle his library and she asks him if he's read any he says no because he doesn't know how to read. but it looks good that he has them all. so its that kind of thing. you know?

mallorym said...

There's probably a really good answer to why Gatsby didn't drink. I just don't know what it is :) Maybe he enjoys being the only person that can have a good time without drinking, or something.

Janae said...

i think the reason that he was not druck so he can keep an eye on things and make sure that he doesn't say any thing that he doesn't suppose to or he can not hold the alcohol inside him.

Unknown said...

Eric- The wheel falling off is on pg. 59. "Your lucky it was just the wheel!..."

Pat said...

I disagee, I dont think Gatsby throws partys to whatch the people. I think he Throws partys to distract the people from him.

drewb12 said...

With the war, how can the view be the same though? like if they experienced the same things in war why do they act different in life decisions? Does gatsby just hold parties to make people happy?

mallorym said...

Maybe Gatsby is afraid that if he drinks around his guests, he will say or do something he doesn't want them to know about. He could be worried about exposing something nobody else knows...which would explain why he's sort of suspicious.

Kristin M said...

I agree with Sara, maybe Gatsby has parties so people will like him.

eric said...

Branching off of what Pat said I think Gatsby is the symbol of what Fitzgerald wanted his life to be like.

Kristin M said...

I agree with Sara, maybe Gatsby has parties so people will like him.

ryan f said...

Why are parties a method to achieve social acceptance?

KatieM2009 said...

Eric- I don't think it causes people to be who they are but it does make them more interesting. It causes interesting situations to happen and then giving people something to talk about.

Unknown said...

Then on pg. 60...
"Half a dozen fingers pointed at the amputated wheel..."
"It came off," someone explained.

Hannah L said...

If Gatsby was socially akaward and wanted to fit in and tried to do so by throwing these elabrate partys, why didnt he do more to become noticed at these events?

Unknown said...

AND continuing on pg. 60

"But the wheels off!"
This is sad after the driver insists he can still drive the car.

KatieM2009 said...

Parties are a way to get people to know you. Also back in this time if you had good property, a party was a good way to show it off. The more parties you can have is also a symbol of your wealth. These people always finds way to show off their wealth and what they have.

mallorym said...

To Ryan's question---I think parties are used for social acceptance because they can socialize with everybody, and act superior because it's their house, and they can show off their house and their posessions, etc..

ryan f said...

Does Gatsby desire to live his life at a dstance from others?

Kristin M said...

I thought it was interesting that Gatsby's guests talked about
Gatsby at his own party.

Unknown said...

I think Gatsby has a big secret.

Janae said...

I don't think he want to be notice I think he just wanted to be like and doesn't want people in his busniess that why he's to himself.

KatieM2009 said...

Hannah- He doesnt have to be socially noticed at these parties because he becomes known just for throwing the parties. I do think he should be more socially envolved because that is how you make friends but during these times you were just known for the parties and social events you hold. This is still some what true in the high class communities these days as well.

Hannah D said...

I think that parties are a way of social acceptance because of how it reflects on you. Everyone wants to dare to have the most amazing party on the street. But, that doesn't always seem to be the case. If your party get's people excited, and pumped, then they are sure to come back, because, your not a stick in the mud, your actually "cool."

mallorym said...

Me too Julie :)

Kristin M said...

What do you guys think Gatsby is hiding? What does it have to do with?

Hannah L said...

I agree with you julie Gatsby is to mysterious there is something going on there.

Emily A said...

With this introduction of Gatsby, what do you think about Gatsby? Is Gatsby going to by cheating on someone too?

Hannah D said...

Ryan, that comes to a good question. If he want's to socially decline people, then are his parties more of a distraction method?

eric said...

It seems like Gatsby looks for sympathy at some points in the story. Like when he said the quote about him not being such a good host.

LyndseyB said...

I think that Great Gatsby seems like a very nobel character. Someone in the circle had said he was called great because of his rep. but he seems very honest and real.

Hannah L said...

I think that Gatsby is hidding something in his past maybe something to do with him being in the war.

ChrisC said...

maybe gatsby doesn't want to be noticed. maybe he throws these parties to keep people occupied and not question who he is, like if he really is rich or really did graduate from oxford and kill a man

ryan f said...

Do you think Gatsby throws these parties to put up a wall against what goes on in his personal life?

Kristin M said...

It seems like Gatsby really cares about what people think. Why does he care so much? Have events happened in his life that make him think people are judging him.

WesL said...

Gatsby seems like more of the intellectual type

Emily A said...

I think Blake's comment about Gatsby, was true. I feel like Gatsby is going to be someone Nick will become good friends with because I think they share beliefs and they don't have to be the center of attention all the time.

JonathanB said...

If gatsby is so popular you'd think enough people would want to have a romantic relationship with him because he is so well known.

Pat said...

True party's are to get to know the host but in this case because of all the distractions and gossip he kind of fades to the backround. Just like when Nick entered the party he made an attempt to greet the host but got distracted. I am sure liquore has a big impact on this

mallorym said...

I wonder if Gatsby sort of keeps to himself because he feels superior to everyone else, and he realizes he as nothing to prove to them

Unknown said...

Maybe he told Jordan part of his secret. She comes back to Nick and says," Iv'e just heard the most amazing things" and "It was- simply amazing." pg. 57

Kristin M said...

Does Gatsby know who he is?

KatieM2009 said...

I think Gatsby is a mysterious character. I think there is something he is hiding. I don't necesarily think it's cheating on someone but there is something he is up to and I am curious about what it is.

JonathanB said...

why is this book called the great gatsby if gatsby isn't really that great???

drewb12 said...

I like Frosty's question....I believe he chooses to live far away and it doesn't seem like he wants to change that...he gets excited when he is invited to a party so maybe he enjoys some connection

Hannah D said...

I agree that he throws the parties as a method of distraction. Though at his parties, he's listening to his fellow followers about how he's a mess up, but still, I think that rich people, just go to parties for the social life, and in their reality, they could care less. Because they are rich, what do they have to loose?

TaylorS2009 said...

I think Gatsby likes to live his life at a distance because he might have had something happen to him due to being as wreckless as everyone else is now and he learned his lesson so to speak. All the rumors had to come from somewhere, something must have happened similar to the rumors.

LyndseyB said...

kristin, yea gatsby knows who he is, he invited him in person. Gatsby seems to know everyone and watch them. Hes very observent

Unknown said...

Gatsby does not seem to have any sort of family.

kelsieb said...

Ryan- I don't know if Gatsby holds parties to disguise his personal life. I think that the rumors going around have nothing to do with what actually happened in his past.

Emily A said...

Will Nick let what he heard about Gatsby influence his thought of him or will he give Gatsby a chance and actually get to know him.

eric said...

Going of of Emily's comment. I don't think Gatsby would cheat on somebody because the way I see it this is the image of the perfect life from F. Scott Fitzgerald's perspective

ryan f said...

Does Gatsby either compare or contrast to the values that were held during the 1920's?

Janae said...

I think Nick and Garsby are going to be in trouble in the near future.

Unknown said...

And Jordan also swore she wouldn't tell anything that she had heard from Gatsby on pg. 57

kelsieb said...

I think that Nick likes Gatsby because whether or not he knows it he is very similar to Gatsby.

kelsieb said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
ryan f said...

Maybe Gatsby's characteristics are based on how Fitgerald thought he was looked at by others during his lifetime

Hannah D said...

I know that today, drama is always following us around, but, do people like to cause drama back then? Such as, making up lies that go way to far?

Unknown said...

I can see Jordan cheating on Nick if they start dating because she lies.

Hannah L said...

I wonder if Jorden is going to cause trouble later in the book as a result of lying.

Emily A said...

Why does Fitzgerald not mention Gatsby's family. Will that affect his life? Will Daisy have feelings for Gatsby?

mallorym said...

I'm thinking thast Gatsby is just way ahead of everybody. Maybe he is just shy, and he doesnt mean to impress anybody because he knows what he is and what he isn't, but I stil think he definately has a secret. Somehow those two objectives might intertwine later on.

Hannah L said...

That is good emily I never thought of it that way maybe.

mallorym said...

I like Emily's comment. What if one of the women falls for Gatsby? Would anybody be surprised?

Kristin M said...

Why would he write love letters if he didn't love her?

Unknown said...

I don't know if this is important but Fitzgerald was an alcoholic and Gatsby didn't drink.

ChrisC said...

I think that nick and gatsby are going to be good friends, becuase nick right off the bat seems to like who gatsby is and not to mention that they both served in the war together.

Pat said...

Maybe showing that Gatsby is distant in this book reflects Fitzgeralds feelings on wanting to be invisible durring this point in his life

KatieM2009 said...

For hannah d's comment- I think gossip was here before we were and will be once we are gone. Gossip is something that will always be a part of human society because as humans we are curious and we like to be entertained and we dont really mind if that means ruining others lives to do it.

Hannah D said...

With all these views on gatsby, and how it could have possible similarities to Fitzgerald, is this something that we should closer analyze. Because, when you remember, a lot of famous people would write, but we wouldn't pay attention, but in reality, their writing was a cry for help. So, something along those lines.

ryan f said...

After reading further into this book, do you still get the feeling that Nick is morally privileged?

Unknown said...

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a love triangle between Nick, Jordan and Gatsby.

eric said...

Is this a case of satire over this time by Fitzgerald?

ChrisC said...

maybe he wants to love her so he says it but he just doesn't mean it, he just hopes that he will someday

mallorym said...

I think the fact that Fitzgerald is an alcoholic and Gatsby doesn't even drink is symbolism. Like someone said early, Gatsby might be the person that Fitzgeral always wanted to be.

Janae said...

I wonder if the girl that Nick is writting is going to have a bigger part in the story.

what do you think

Pat said...

I think Nick and Gatsby's relationship is fake just to gain social acceptance. Both are trying to be friends with everyone

Hannah D said...

I agree with your comment Janae.
