Live Blogging: Gatsby, Chapter 4

Do you predict that Daisy and Gatsby will have an affair?
Why does Nick start talking about all of the people he's seen at Gatsby's parties? Seems somewhat irrelevant...
I think that Dasiy and Gaysby will have an affair
Well I don't think they will have an affair. But I do think they will meet each other and at least become friends.
I agree with what mike is saying. Then again a lot of information Fitzgerald writes about is somewhat pointless to the entire plot, from my perspective
I believe that they will have an affair because when Daisy heard about Gatsby she became very intrested. Maybe the letter that made her so upset before her wedding was from Gatsby, and part of her wanted to be with him.
Mike, when does he talk about all the people he's seen at Gatsby's parties?
I think Nick is just trying to figure out what the deal with Gatsby is. Also everyone gets in everybody's business in this story so this is just another way to get involved and put their nose where it doesnt belong.
To me, Daisy seems somewhat innocent and I don't think that she will have an affair with Gatsby, despite his efforts to do so.
That is an interesting point hannah l. That might make sense that she received a letter from Gatsby before the wedding.
I think that its very possible that they will have an affair. There is so much alreay going wrong in the other couples relationships if they are cheating. I just think its what expected now from them all.
In reference to the invitation for the party gatsby didn't know that he was her cousin yet.
Now looking back, it would make scense that gatsby wanted to have daisy, with the boat and the dock and all
Gatsby seems like a mysterious character, so I think him and Daisy will have an affair.
Brian it was at the beginning of the chapter when he's describing multiple people.
I think that Daisy might have an affair with Gatsby. Because she knows about what all the men are doing it makes me think that she will just do the same and not really care.
I don't think Gatsby knew that Nick knew Dasiy. I think he found out from Miss Baker and then he came up with a plan so he can see her.
I don't think that Gatsby knew that Nick was his cousin maybe it was to get on his good side so that he could meet Daisy at Nick's house.
I think there is a huge possibility that there will be a very complicated love triangle, with Gatbsy, Daisy, and Nick. And the fact that they spread rumors and gossip like there's no tomorrow, that will probably enrage the whole thing.

I agree with Wes. The pieces do sort of fall into place with the boat and the house and everything.

I agree that the gossip will have a large part in this awkward love triangle that is forming. Gossip has a large part in all their lives anyways so I think it will be an even larger part of this situation.
I agree with Katie, I think this book is a lot about rumors and getting in peoples business.

she might try to have an affair in order to get back at tom becuase she knows that he is cheating on her she just doesn't say anything about it.
Mallory I don't think that Nick will be involved in that triangle but rather Tom. I know that this is a weird time but Nick is still cousins with Daisy..
I dont think that Gatsby will have a love relationship with anyone in the book. Just because of his persona and what we have known from Gatsby.
I agree with mallory on the love circle. But it seems pretty strange to pine for a girl this long. Why does he go to such extents to be close to her?
With all of the different affairs going on, do you still think that they love the people they are married to? If not, why are they with them?

I don't think that we know for sure that Daisy knows her husband is having an affair. I think she might suspect but Fitzgerld never comes out and says that Daisy knows about it.
that would be gross if their was a love triangle between Daisy Nick and Gatsby because Nick and Daisy are cousins!

i think that eventually all teh couples are gonna find out about one anothers affairs and lead to the downfall of their marriages.
Gatsby is obviously about to surprise us, and show that his persona isn't what we think, hinting "The Great Gatsby", so we'll see.
I disagree with Mandy. I think he will have a love intrest in someone becusae he seems that hes lonly and needs someone to be with. Why do you think he has all of these parties all of the time?
I agree with Mallory, I think that sometime in the next few chapters a complicated love triangle will happen.
Writing back to Madison. I think that they love each other but during this time period i think that it was expected to cheat and have other affairs. It was the thing to do in this time period.

Hannah, I think that Daisy does know her husband is having an affair, that is why she got so depressed. Jordan said that it was common knowledge and even Tom knew that Daisy had told them about their affairs.
I think that some of the people like tome are still in love with their spouses and that is why they will not get a divorce.

i think that gatsby has all these parties because he feels he has to portray a certain image to the public whom which he is so highly reguarded.
Madison, back in this time marriage wasn't always for love. Also, because the cheating isn't exactly public yet and talked about often I think they couples are just going to stay together out of ignorance. They are just going to pretned that nothing is happening because that is easier then bringing it to public attention even though everyone already knows its happening.
The women in this story just want money and sex. They don't care about anything else.
I agree with Taylor. But I think that they all know that they are having different affairs with each other. They should know because people talk and the word will eventually get around.

I think the settle for the next best thing. I believe that they could not have what they wanted so they got married and decide to still be with the person they got married and not have a divorced.
Hannah, I think that "tome" (tom ha ha) doesn't love his wife anymore. If he loved her he wouldn't cheat on her. He may still be sympathetic to her but if he loved her he wouldnt be with myrtle.
To Brian, there is no real way to tell due to the mystery of his character you really have to just make a choice as a reader

From the inner circle~ I think it's true thats he did kill somebody, because I remember Mrs. Leclaire telling us how its a love story and a murder story tied into one book..like something really devastating will happen involving somebodies death later on in the book, so that'd make sense if he said he's murdered someone before..
I agree with Taylor because now it seems like he is doing everything he can to win Daisy back.
Are some of the characters still in love? Did all the real love go away, or was there no real love in the beginning?
Answering Brian's question. I think that Gatsby is telling the truth but I think that he is leaving certain things out from his past and is trying to hide something.
So Eric, do you think he is telling the truth about his past?
i think that gatsby is going to get killed later in the story after him and tom become close
to eric, with the way that fitzgerald has been building the story partially around the "love triangle", it would make sense in a way if the affair happened between daisy and gatsby. that could create a conflict for a climax to the story.

Mallory- Wouldn't it make more sense for the murder to happen during the story instead of in someones past. I see where your coming from but I just feel it would make for a better story if the murder was in the present rather then in the past.
When Gatsby was talking about his past he kept mentioning that he had something terrible happen to him and that he tried to ignore it. What could this terrible secret be, maybe it has to do with his past.
Mandy, what would he want to hide from Nick? Why do you think he would lie to Nick?

In response to Pat in the Inner circle, i think that Gatsby feels like he's asking to much from Nick to tell him what he wants himself so he has Jordan do it.

i honestly think that the love issue is not the main ingredient in the stories conflict but rather plays into the effect these people will have on one another later in the story.
Agreeing with Kassie, I think that Fitzgerald is building up the realationship between Gatsby and Daisy. Hes showing the attraction and fireworks now, but becuase of the incidenes that are ocuring it think that their relationship will eventualy fall.
Don't even worry about it...

Lyndsey, this event obviously happend in he past if he was talking about his past. I think this might have something to do with the murder rumor that is spreading around through everyone.
looking back over the blogs i saw Taylor's i saw that he thought Gatsby would die, i agree with him and I believe it will spark a great controversy.

well i think that they will all have their own affairs at the present and later they will need to rely on that individual in which they were cheating on with their spouse. And an eventual murder that would create biases as to my or who killed gatsby
I disagree with Ben. I don't think that all the women in the story want is sex and money. I think there looking for someone to share there lives with and have a little fun in there lives.

Kristin, i doubt anyone has died already. I think that a murder is going to happen. And by past I meant his background like his family since he seems kind of dark and evasive about these facts.
Does anybody think that if Gatsby does get killed later, it will be an accident? Or intentional?
Lyndsey, i think that he has done something horrible that he doesnt want anyone to kn ow about. What is it? I dont know but i think it could connect back to the rumors that were going around about him. At this point anything could be possible and anything that is said could be the truth or a lie!
Going off of Eric's comment. If Gatsby does get murdered do you think it will have to do with this building love triangle or some othe controversy we will see later in the story?
Gatsby seems like a very mysterious character, so I think he is going to really surprise us.

eric, I think that maybe Gatsby may die because he loves daisy and tom is Daisy's wife
I don't think Gastby is going to be killed in this story but I do think that some is going to die.
I agree with Lyndsey it seems like people are just making the murder up right now but maybe events with Daisy will cause Gatsby to murder someone.

yeah i think that daisy will play with gatsby's mind and tell him that she wants him but never finds the courage to leave Tom

women inevitably are the downfall of men in my opinion and especially in Gatsby's situation. He loves a women whom he cannot have but is willing to do anything for her. Quite the predicament right?

I agree with Taylor. Standing up for what you want and sticking out and having the courage do do something different in this society isn't really something people see as a good thing. So Daisy might lead Gatsby on and then not have the courage to make it known.

Maybe Gatsby ending up dead in the end of the story could be better for him then being alive meaning he is alright.

Commenting on Ben's comment, around 8ish I thought. Is Fitzgerald using satire to display the lifestyle these women want? They are just as power hungry as a lot of the men in the story as well as them being simply greedy.
Lyndsey is right. That quote she read about Gatsby being alright kind of throws off our thoughts of him getting killed.

I agree with eric. I think that the author is using sature to describe the lifestyle these people live and how crazy it is. I think that he is trying to show how foolish these girls can be.
Taylor I like your thought about Daisy and Gatsby both dying. That would be an interesting twist to the book. That makes sense because then they would be together and it doesn't really matter whether its in life or death.

to brian im just throwin out the idea ya know just saying like look at fitzgeralds actual life. His wife cheated on him and he was never the same until he died. I just see the same ideal going on within Gatsby
Gatsby will not get killed his actions are what is controling what happens in the story.

looking at fitzgerald and his life, everything is very dramatic. daisy and gatsby both dying in the end would fit, love in life or in death
First off, concerning the aspect of whether or not an affair will occur between Daisy and Gatsby, i don't see that happening because I see Gatsby's love for her run deeper than physical attraction. Gatsby sees Daisy similarly as Dexter saw Judy in "Winter Dreams", as a guiding force that seems distanced, yet filled with so much love. I also saw Gatsby reaching towards the the water in the direction of the green light as a connection to the relationship Fitzgerald had with his wife, Zelda, in that there always seemed as if there was a barrier within the relationship. One would reach towards the other for comfort and stability, yet the efforts would not be returned on the other side. It was also interesting how there is now a spectrum of personalities concerning Gatsby. He is consumed in his parties and covered in this mystique, yet on the other hand he is possibly involved in bootlegging, an offense that would contradict his entire persona to this point.
