I miss spring break!

drewb12 said...

Why at the beginning of chapter % was Gatsby's house on fire?

eric said...

What exactly does Gatsby do for work?

SaraB2009 said...

ME TOO! but american lit is awesome!

blakeh said...

Well lauren just think, The sooner spring break ends, the sooner summer will get here haha

drewb12 said...

what does gatsby do with his life more like ha

WesL said...

So does Gatsbys house really burn down because later in the chapter they tour his house?

Hannah D said...

Did Gatsby set his own house on fire? Since he has so many party's and there's alcohol, did he mess up?

MandyN said...

Commenting back to drew. I thought that his house wasnt on fire but it looked like it from all the lights and it was glowing.

Taylor H said...

i thought that gatsby inheirited all of his money? What work would he have for Nick?

Lauren L said...

I think he was showing off to her because he wanted her to think that he was like awesome!

I don't think he set his house on fire, he just had all the lights in his house turned on.

Hannah D said...

Wait wes, so, if his house didn't burn down, then is it a light show?

Hannah L said...

Do you think that Gatsby was really involved in the oil and drug industrys or did he maybe getg involved in a shady industry? because when nick asked Gatsby snapped "that is not your affair"

LyndseyB said...

Do you think that Daisy and Gatsby's "relationship" is superficial or that they actually care for each other?

MandyN said...

I think that Gatsby's job has something to do with bets or maybe stocks to something.

Pat said...

Why is money and image such a big deal in the 1920's?

blakeh said...

I think that she was regretting her decision not to marry Gatsby

Janae said...

I don't think the house was on fire. i think it look like the house was on fire.

Lauren L said...

I think she wasn't truly talking about the shirts but the fact that she misses Gatsby and wishes her and Tom were not together because Gatsby would never cheat on her like Tom does.

eric said...

I agree with Mandy. The large amounts of light just made the house seem to be burning. This is an example of what great detail that Fitzgerald goes to to describe a scene.

drewb12 said...

o ok thanks i didnt get that after reading it does it infer something for later? cause if no one was home why need the light show?

blakeh said...

Why did nick not want to accept the job that Gatsby offered?

KatieM2009 said...

I think Gatsby is involved with some shady business. He seems to always be hiding something. Also, he has alot of money and although he said it was all inherited, it could be from some sort of shady activity.

Taylor H said...

i dont think they truly care for eachother but only think of what they had and begin to imagine what it might have been like

WesL said...

I think that Gatsby realy does love Diasey but i think daisy only likes his wealth and prosperity.

kelsieb said...

Gatsby's house was not accutally on fire but every light in the house was on I think. So it made the house seem to be on fire because it was giving off so much light.

Janae said...

About the crying in the shirts i think Daisy was overwhelem with feeling and did not know what to do but cry.

LyndseyB said...

Hannah, I think that Gatsby has a sort of shady business. I think initially that was his job, but the way he offered Nick a job and all his phone calls allude to another job.

Taylor H said...

i dont think gatsby is involved in a "shady business" whos to say he didnt legitimately make his money?

Hannah D said...

I think that in the 1920's, people wanted to be viewed as the perfect Mr. Rogers type of family. So, if they had money, no affairs, and a kid, then they were the ideal family.

KatieM2009 said...

I think that Nick denied the job because he has a bad feeling about the work he has been offered. I think Nick has a good head on his shoulders and doesn't want to become involved with the shady business that Gatsby is involved in.

eric said...

Taylor do you ever think they would get together?

Hannah L said...

I think that the two genuanly care for each other because Gatsby was acting nervous and then at the end of the chapter they seemed happyer together than Tom and Daisy whose marriage is superfical.

MandyN said...

I agree with katie. I also think that he inheriated money from somewhere else and is hiding it from nick.

Lauren L said...

BOOTLEGGERS!!!

SaraB2009 said...

I think Daisy liked him a long time ago but Im not sure if she feels the same way anymore about Gatsby. I think she is confused about her feelings toward him but likes the fact that he has money.

blakeh said...

I agree with Hannah. Family was the main priority for people back in the 1920's and the ideal family was probably what most parents aspired to achieve.

kelsieb said...

I agree with Wes and I think that Daisy was very interested in wealth now. However, she has been with Tom for so long that I don't know how much wealth she has has in the recent years.

Pat said...

After Nick's little tea party Gatsby invites both Nick and Daisy back to his place. Why does Gatsby need Nick to persue his affair with Daisy?

TaylorS2009 said...

Gatsby might be in a shady type of business because he has all those friends that are most likely in it as well.

eric said...

Mandy...why would he hide anything from nick?

MandyN said...

I also agree with hannah that Tom and Daisy's marriage is superficial. There is no love and I think that Daisy might leave him for Gatsby.

Taylor H said...

Yes, eric i do believe that they will get together. Everyone seems to explore their boundaries and push the limits of what they can get away with, so i believe they will eventually get together

Janae said...

I don't think Nick really want to be in any of things he got himself in.

drewb12 said...

Daisy is going to play both of them

KatieM2009 said...

I agree with Sara, I thik that Daisy once had feelings for Gatsby but after all these years she had just put those feelings in the past. Now that he is back I think that she might have those feelings coming back into her life but she isn't sure what to do with them and whether to act on them or not.

WesL said...

Things are starting to get messy and i think that it will al collide soon.

Janae said...

why do you think Gatsby had so many lights on is his house?

MandyN said...

eric, I think that he seemed to hide something from nick when he was explaining what he did for his job and where he inherited his money. He kept giving different answers.

LyndseyB said...

Speaking of the cover i think the eyes are the billboard that overlooks the city.

kelsieb said...

I think that both people were nervous about the meeting once they found out what was really the reason that they were both there. Also I was wondering who exactly the cover was of.

Taylor H said...

yeha i agree with drew, she is in a position to exploit both gatsby and her husband for either their money or whatever

Hannah D said...

I'm still trying to understand Daisy's character. Is she someone we would trust? Or is she one you should always keep an eye out for?

KatieM2009 said...

I think the eyes on the cover are the eyes of everyone else looking into others lives. They look sad because those people are never truely happy because they are living life through other people instead of living their own lives. I think these eyes are symbolic of the way this society has been acting through out the book.

drewb12 said...

Do you think Daisy will leave Tom? Cause gatsby will probably creep on her.

Taylor H said...

i dont think daisy is necessarily a bad person or one to watch out for, because she really hasnt done anything but supress her feelings for gatsby thus far.

MandyN said...

I think that when Gatsby needed Nick to help persue the meeting with Daisy it showed a weak and vulnerable side of Gatsby. It changed my perspective of him.

SaraB2009 said...

Hannah... I see Daisy as a good character that could get caught up in bad things. Especially if she is with Gatsby, who I think is a very suspicious character.

kelsieb said...

I agree with Taylor about Gatsby's job. I think that he is in a type of job that he has to hide what he does because he won't tell Nick what he does. When Nick asks Gatsby tells him that it's none of his business.

Hannah L said...

Wes i disagree with you I think that Daisy and Gatsby had a past and that is way they care so much about each other. Also on pg 81 back when they were talking about Daisy's wedding and she got drunk and said she changed her mind she was crying and holding a letter. I think the letter was from Gatsby and that shows that she cares about him and not just his money.

Janae said...

I don't think Daisy is goiing to leave Tom.

KatieM2009 said...

Mandy- I agree with you. I think this side of Gatsby that is being displayed is a way of showing that he has a "human" side. He has been portrayed as just someone of money and society but this side shows that he has emotions and is a real person deep down inside.

Lauren L said...

I dont think Gatsby will let Daisy cheat on Tom and Daisy wont get leave Tom because her reputation is really good since she doesn't drink.

Taylor H said...

What does everyone think of Gatsby as a person? I thought he was sort of a goon but now im beginning to like him

MandyN said...

I agree with Taylor that Daisy isn't really a person to watch out for but I do think that she will do something in the future that could change the out come of her and Tom.

LyndseyB said...

I think that Daisy is whimsical and superficial. She doesn't seem like she is all there or that she knows what she wants. She may become involved with Gatsby but I doubt she will leave Tom or she already would have.

kelsieb said...

I think that Gatsby is a sketchy stocker because he could have invited her to his parties on his own. He knew where she lived.

drewb12 said...

Everyone thinks so highly of Gatsby and it seems no one knows the truth about him though...not even F.Scott

Taylor H said...

yeah he could have but it would be awkward to go to a married womens house and ask her to your party in front of her husband. Personally i wouldnt do it

eric said...

Going off of what Taylor said, I agree that now we as readers are suppose to begin to feel enjoyment towords Gatsby. Do remember the title of the book is The Great Gatsby. Ps.. I love Ian.

Janae said...

I think that Gatsby share his really side with Dasiy and don't try to hind thing and he can be very open with her that probably why he was doing all this this to impress her.

Hannah L said...

So far in the book almost everyone expect nick seems superfical. I think Daisy is mostly confused and unhappy.

MandyN said...

I agree with Kelsie. There is something weird and mysterious with Gatsby that kind of makes me think that he is something that he is not.

KatieM2009 said...

I think that Daisy knows what she wants and is intelligent but she puts on a stupid act and pretends to be ignorant because she knows that way she won't get hurt. I think she feels that she will fit in better by putting on this act and just acting like all the other women in the time but in all reality she has ideas of her known and thinks by her self and is really intelligent.

Hannah D said...

Is Daisy using Gatsby as an "escape" from something in her world?

kelsieb said...

Drew...I don't quite understand what you mean by the fact that not even F.Scott knows who Gatsby is.

Taylor H said...

yeah i think F. Scott wanted to create the charactor of Gatsby to symbolize himself. Maybe he felt he didnt know himself

WesL said...

Is nick and baker the only people that have a good relationship?

Pat said...

What was the deal with the green light? Any symbolism?

Janae said...

i think that nick is going to be caught up in a lots of things and something might happen to him

kelsieb said...

I thought that it was weird that Daisy asked Tom if he loved her as well.

LyndseyB said...

Nick that was an interesting comment about Fitzgerald not knowing about Gatsby. How do you think Fitzgerald feels towards Gatsby and the culture? Is this his opinion of his own life.

Hannah L said...

I think that Daisy is using Gatsby as an escape because she is so unhappy with Tom and she just wants to be happy.

SaraB2009 said...

I agree that Gatsby is a sketchy stalker but then again because he likes her so much maybe he is afraid of ruining things with her, and that is why he didnt invite her to his parties. Also I think he was afraid of putting the wrong impression of him in her mind.

KatieM2009 said...

I don't think Daisy is using Gatsby as an escape but at the same time I think she has a desire for something different that Gastby brings to the table. I don't know what Daisy would be escaping from besides her knowledge of Tom cheating on her.

MandyN said...

I think that Fitzgerald created Gatsby because that was the kind of person that he wanted to be.

Taylor H said...

yes i agree with eric entirely, and ian snores heavily

drewb12 said...

like because F. Scott was ruining his own marriage at the time Does he relate Gatsby to himself?

ryan f said...

I believe that Daisy cries once she witnesses Gatsby's collection of English shirts because she is overwhelmed by his success on the surface, and she is only picturing the type of relationship she could have had many years back with Gatsby, since they both bring out the best in each other. Also, a new element is brought into the novel, with a human side of Gatsby being revealed. I feel that his clumsiness around Daisy is symbolic of the way he has handled his past, in a way that on the surface seems smooth, but further in the book, I sense that we will find out he has stumbled, his way through life, and in his desires for Daisy. Furthermore, I think that whatever business Gatsby offered towards Nick will be compromising towards them both, and could play a turning point in the path of the book. Finally, if I was to describe Nick, I would categorize him as a bystander because of the way he is involved in the happenings in New York City, yet he has neglected to voice his opinions or act on much of anything. I am predicting this to change, possibly due to this business he has been offered that will provoke a reaction.

JonathanB said...

I agree with Katie, Nick probably at the time was thinking along the lines of the rumors he heard what if they are true? He has so many questions and concerns about Gatsby and his business that his rational thought is that he shouldn't accept it because he doesn't know what kind of work he'll be getting himself into.
